Discipline and Time essays

Discipline and Time essays "Hierarchized continuous and functional surveillance may not be one of the great technical inventions' of the eighteenth century," according to Foucault, but institutional surveillance nonetheless expresses a social, economic, and political need of a capitalist society (176). Discipline operates as a power structure and functions as a social technology. Discipline finds expression through various social institutions, from the military to the factory, to the school. The purpose of discipline and training is not necessarily to create a unified mass out of a collection of individuals but to individuate the means of production according to the needs of the manufacturer or capitalist. As a relatively simple structure, the disciplinary hierarchy nevertheless implies the means of social, Discipline, like any mechanical or physical technology, is designed to transform the natural world. As such, discipline functions as a transformer of the human will. The individual worker, military officer, or student is subordinated to the superior officer or trainer or teacher in order for the society as a whole to function according to capitalist means and ends. This type of discipline is accomplished through continual and pervasive surveillance, not necessarily via cameras or videotape but through an organized social and professional hierarchy. For instance, at the factory, the supervisors keep close eyes on the workers. At school, the administration and teachers keep their eyes on the students. At military camps, prevailing officers keep tabs on their junior officers. These surveillance mechanisms serve a social function as well as a practical one: the do not merely maintain law and order in a society. Rather, surveillance and discipline permit the creation of a class-oriented capitalist society. The time-clock preceded and also accompanied the advent of the ...

And people will notice when you disregard it. If you want to be respected, you need to make a habit of drafti ng smart, professional emails. Resist the temptation to express yourself in exclamation points and emoji. Use concise, correct language instead. And remember to be brief.Relying on clichà ©Check the next five emails you write before you send them. Are you using stock clichà ©s and dead language that isn’t yours? Or worse- are you using corporate speak? Talking about â€Å"circling the wagons† or â€Å"digging deep† or other meaningless phrases? Try to keep your language fresh and clean and surgically to the point.IMHO lolzNobody cares that you can use all the trendy acronyms, whether either irony or earnest. There is no place for them in a professional forum. Srlsy.Replying allUnless you have a very good reason to do so- i.e. everyone on that original thread absolutely needs a piece of information that only you possess- just don’t do it. You’ll just clog everybody’s inboxes with an unnecessary reply. If you’re communicating with you r team and boss, leave your boss out of the back-and-forth and CC her only when she needs to be in the loop on a particular message.Cleaning out your inboxIt doesn’t seem like something you might be doing wrong; it’s what organized, productive people do, right? Wrong. Chances are, the time you spend sorting all your emails into file folders is time you could actually spend working and furthering your career.

EFFECTS OF FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME Research Paper

EFFECTS OF FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME - Research Paper Example Collectively, the range of disorders is known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).† (Mayo clinic staff) Fetal alcohol exposure is the leading known cause of many mental problems in the western world. It is difficult for the westerners to avoid liquor completely from their daily routine food habits because of the climatic conditions and the cultural peculiarities. Drug/alcohol addiction is one of the curses for the western countries. â€Å"Its estimated that each year in the United States, 1 in every 750 infants is born with a pattern of physical, developmental, and functional problems referred to as fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), while another 40,000 are born with fetal alcohol effects (FAE)† (Fetal alcohol syndrome) There is no scientific support for the type of widespread hysteria that permeates public discussion on fetal alcohol syndrome. (Prof. Hanson) Though the fact, excessive use of alcohol during pregnancy can cause problems to the child, proved beyond doubts, there are still doubts about the results of normal usages of drinks during pregnancy period. Many people still believe that a single drink daily may not cause many problems to the offspring even at the pregnancy period. â€Å"When you drink alcohol, it enters your bloodstream and reaches your developing fetus by crossing the placenta. Because a fetus metabolizes alcohol more slowly than an adult does, your developing babys blood alcohol concentrations are higher than those in your body. The presence of alcohol can impair optimal nutrition for your babys developing tissues and organs and can damage brain cells.† (Mayo clinic staff) A person’s important phase of development is his childhood before and after birth. All his future personalities will depend on his personal health both physical and mental during this period. If the brain cells damaged during childhood it is difficult to replace it and hence problems can occur at later stages. Low birth weight, small

Abortion :: essays research papers

Good morning/afternoon ladies and gentleman. Today I am here to convince you without a doubt that abortion should be brought to an end. Points that I will be covering are the medical risks involved, economic support for the child, couples that do not have a chance to have a child and ¡K. The scientific definition of abortion is the termination of pregnancy of an embryo or of a fetus that is incapable of survival. There are over 131,000 abortions in Australia every year. Firstly: medical risks involved. Some short term or physical side effects such as: „X  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Infection „X  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Bleeding „X  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Perforation of the uterus „X  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Anaesthetic complications „X  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Deaths And as for that there are also long term side effects such as: „X  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Cervical incompetence, in which the neck of the womb loses its capacity to hold the developing foetus in place, and he or she falls out of the uterus because of their weight and the force of gravity „X  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Abortion is thus associated with higher rates of miscarriage in subsequent pregnancies, usually in the second twelve weeks „X  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Infection acquired at the time of the operation can cause pelvic infection, decreased patency of the fallopian tubes and sterility. „X  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Adhesion can cause recurring abdominal pain and sterility. „X  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It is now known that women having abortions and considerably more likely to suffer from breast cancer later in their life. My second point is the economic support for the child: Why do people that don ¡Ã‚ ¦t want kids have to have an abortion? There are always other factors that you can come to such as adoption. In third world countries, the people have a right to have children but do they have the opportunity? If they did have a child, how would they support it through the poverty? They don ¡Ã‚ ¦t even have enough food and water to support themselves at the moment. This clearly indicates to support the child you must be economically healthy. In a country like our own, we have all the resources at our fingertips, and why do people still question and rely on abortion? If people had a child or two, or maybe even more, we will still have enough resources to support us and our child healthy and we have resources that the third-world countries don ¡Ã‚ ¦t have. My third point is how many couples do not have the chance to have a child: Many childless couples on the other hand face long waiting lists in the hope they can adopt. Some 50,000 Australian couples a year apply to adopt children.

History is by nature, an interpretive discipline Essay

With simplest words, history is the story of the human experience. While history teaching originally focused on the facts of political history such as wars and dynasties, contemporary history education has assumed a more integrative approach offering students an expanded view of historical knowledge that includes aspects different subjects, such as of geography, religion, anthropology, philosophy, economics, technology, art and society. This wider embrace is reflected in the vague but ubiquitous term, â€Å"social studies. History has no subject matter of its own. History derives its content entirely from other disciplines, especially from the social sciences. Before the disciplines of political science, economics, archeology and sociology had been invented, it was history that dealt with these realms of knowledge. Historians are the generalizers, the synthesizers. They look at an event or series of events and try to bring relevant knowledge from all fields to bear on understanding the situation. Viewed in this light, history is a verb, not a noun; it is more an approach than a subject. This approach is sometimes termed the â€Å"historical method,† which generally involves trying to identify all relevant information about an historical development, critically examining sources for validity and bias, then selecting and organizing this information into a well-constructed narrative that sheds some light on human experience. History is not static; our views of history are constantly changing as new discoveries are made that cast doubt on previous knowledge. New interpretations of historical events frequently come along to challenge older views. Was the Viatnam War really worth of? Or was Ronald Ragan the grand statesman of his age or a less admirable figure? Such newer, alternative explanations are termed revisionist history. The historian, following the historical method, tries to determine if the evidence is real, accurate or biased. After making these judgments, the historian selects some evidence to include in his narrative, and he rejects other sources. The finished product reflects the judgments, point-of-view, biases and errors of the historian himself. This is a highly subjective process throughout. But it should be remembered that history did happen, and without it we would be largely ignorant of the workings of the world and of the human animal. Conscientious historians are aware of the pitfalls in their search for historical truth, and they try to avoid them. Students who are aware of the inherent limitations of history will be better prepared to evaluate the validity of historical evidence and historical accounts and consequently more adept at evaluating the conflicting evidence and opinions surrounding the important issues of their own time. Thus the study of history can teach many critical skills. That is, studying history helps sharpen the critical â€Å"thinking† and communication skills essential to success in school and in most professions.

Discuss the benefits of self evaluation/self assessment as it relates to leaders today - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1146 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Management Essay Type Analytical essay Did you like this example? Q1. 70 Points Understanding Human Behavior is critical to organizations discuss the benefits of self evaluation/self assessment as it relates to leaders today. A1. Self-evaluation or assessment is paramount in understanding human behavior in an organization. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Discuss the benefits of self evaluation/self assessment as it relates to leaders today" essay for you Create order In order to improve skills, a leader needs to perform a self-assessment to determine strengths and weaknesses. Robin Sharma once said à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Leadership is no longer about the size of your title, but the strength of your impactà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . Accordingly à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“your impactà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ largely depends on leadership skills. Robin Sharma. https://www.facebook.com/theofficialrobinsharmapage/photos/a.10150107495570040.292989.105875750039/10152252602695040/?type=1 [accessed 7 April 2014]. There are various tried and tested methods of performing a self-assessment, each of which test various leadership dimensions. Amongst other techniques used are Leadership Steps Assessment (LSA) (Clawson, 2000:4), Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and 360 degree tools. Due to vast cultural backgrounds, during testing circumstances people instinctively tend to fall back on their memeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. In order to understand this, leaders need to comprehend why people behave the way they do. It is thus important for leaders to move beyond intellectual intelligence and expand their emotional, social and change intelligence. The REB model and VABE theory assist leaders in expanding their knowledge of themselves and their impact in an organization. By understanding our values, assumptions, beliefs and expectations (VABEà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s) we also understand humanistic, optimistic and democratic values. When we understand our VABEà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s we take cognizance of others and start to comprehend why people behave the way they do. This in essence allows us to interact, communicate, develop and manage conflicts more effectively. The REB model can better be described using the ABC model (Ellis: 1993) and enlisting the REB model into observable and unobservable events. Observable events can be described as a catalytic event which relates to something that happens in your surrounding environment. This event leads to a reaction which is an à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“emotional responseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ to your VABEà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. Unobservable events are our instinctive, religious and natural values, assumptions, beliefs and expectations experienced after observing a catalytic event. Leadership requires one to understand their own perspective of the world its surroundings, as well as how others perceive the world its surroundings. Each individuals perspective will be defined by their own VABEs and also external contributing factors. As a leader, this is extremely important to understand because how do you want to lead others if you dont understand their interpretation of the world and the surrounding environments? As a leader understanding your own VABEs as well as others VABEs allows you to communicate and interact more effectively, thus allowing you to look past social differences. To improve strengths leaders need to nurture talents, gain sufficient knowledge and improve or gain skills. A good leader would also require a good degree of ethics allowing them to remain impartial, however fully involved in matters. As the visionary, good leaders will take the time to convince others on why it would be important to complete a certain task orobjective, in order for them to comprehend and be self-motivated towards its successful completion. In order to execute this, leaders must place themselves in the shoes of others, thereby assisting others to willingly add value to an organization. Leaders need life experiences and circumstances (good or bad) to evolve into à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Authentic Leadersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . It is impossible for leaders to experience all walks of life, therefore it is equally essential for them to remain prepared (on their feet so to speak). Leaders need to consult case studies of past and present leaders and investigate amongst others downfalls, conflicts and or resolutions, good or bad decisions made, etc. One does not need to reinvent the wheel as life lessons have already taught us where we have faltered, where we have waivered and where we have succeeded. Leaders need to use this as a learning and preparation tool. As a leader, you cannot only rely on your Leadership Traits. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Authentic Leadersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ are shaped when preparation meets situational circumstances meets their already developed intellectual, emotional, change and social intelligence. Q2. 30 Points: Prejudice can be hurtful and destructive discuss how you can personally reduce prejudice in your workplace please provide an example. A1. What is prejudice? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The word prejudice refers to prejudgment, or forming an opinion before becoming aware of the relevant facts of a case.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ Prejudice reflects back to our VABEà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s. A lot of times when one does not understand oneself and others, you automatically (instinctively) lead to prejudice assumptions. By promoting prejudice, you are in fact inhibiting growth and promoting counter productivity because you choose to judge before determining the facts. I will refer to an example in my current position as Head: Electrical Mechanical Engineer in consulting engineering and project management firm. Under normal circumstances in order to level the playing field and avoid prejudice, all government related projects are allocated according to a process of public tender, subsequent adjudications and eventually awarding of contract. In irregular situations some projects are regarded as urgent and to prevent delays therefore bypass the normal process of public tender, in contrast to be processed by way of a closed invitational tender system. The closed invitational tender system involves the invitation of a list of contractors carefully selected by the principal engineer. The process automatically eliminates incompetent bidders as only contractors with a proven track record are enlisted, invited and selected from. As the Head of the Electrical Mechanical En gineering department, I can be unethical and promote prejudice in the workplace by only enlisting companies which I like without properly assessing their track record amongst other facts. This would effectively mean that any companies which for one or other reason I do not favour, would not be enlisted and therefore not stand a fair chance of competing against others for the contract. The prejudice approach above would result in the following: Inhibition of growth towards smaller companies Counter productivity as certain companies would be overloaded with work whilst others would have little or no work Inequality towards companies not listed as they would be labelled as incompetent In order to prevent or reduce prejudice in the workplace the list of companies chosen are circulated within the firm for inputs and comments from relevant parties, ensuring that the onus is not placed upon one individual to choose from. Furthermore contractors are also technically assessed at the end of each project in order to categorise them according to the latest performance. Contractors who do not consistently perform are therefore also automatically eliminated.
